Coinbase Wins CFTC Approval, Completing Full U.S. Crypto Derivatives Stack

Coinbase has secured the final regulatory piece it needed to operate a fully integrated U.S. derivatives business, after the Commodity Futures Trading Commission approved Coinbase Clearing LLC as a registered derivatives clearing organization. The approval means Coinbase can now combine its existing futures commission merchant and designated contract market with its own clearinghouse, giving the exchange the ability to list, broker and clear regulated derivatives within the same corporate stack. Coinbase said the new structure also makes Coinbase Clearing the first U.S. clearinghouse built around USDC-native collateral and 24/7 settlement. For Coinbase, the significance goes beyond another license. It brings the company closer to operating the kind of vertically integrated derivatives infrastructure traditionally associated with major futures exchanges. Coinbase Can Now Control the Full Trade Lifecycle Coinbase already operates Coinbase Derivatives LLC, its CFTC-regulated designated contract market, and Coinbase Financial Markets, its futures commission merchant. The new DCO registration completes the third layer. That gives Coinbase direct control over three separate functions: creating and listing contracts, connecting customers to those products, and clearing the resulting trades. The CFTC registration allows Coinbase Clearing to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps, according to the regulator’s official registration database. The move builds on an earlier expansion of Coinbase’s derivatives business, including a regulatory path that allowed eligible U.S. customers to access certain crypto perpetual futures . USDC Moves Into the Clearing Layer One of the more interesting parts of the announcement is Coinbase’s decision to build the clearinghouse around USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement. Traditional futures markets generally operate around established clearing cycles and banking infrastructure. Coinbase is positioning its system around crypto’s always-on market structure instead. That could become increasingly important as exchanges compete to bring products such as perpetual futures, crypto options and other derivatives onshore. Coinbase already gained regulatory relief earlier this year that expanded access to overseas derivatives products, a decision that also triggered resistance from traditional exchange operators. CME later moved toward a legal challenge against the CFTC , arguing that some crypto perpetual products were being classified incorrectly.
